Abstract

The paper is concerned with a position of a woman doctor in practical healthcare in Russia. Despite a legal right to gender equality and feminisation of some medical professions, women doctors are demonstrated to face challenges in their professional activities so far. The situation in health care system is no exception: a gender bias seems great.

A man doctor`s wage is by far higher compared to that of a woman doctor. The authors drew up a questionnaire and conducted a survey among medical students, residents and doctors in order to estimate a position of a woman doctor in modern medical society and determine the current gender discrimination rate. More than half of the respondents consider gender inequality to exist in medicine. The majority stated to have encountered the existing stereotypes at work. The basic stereotypes appeared to be those associating women with a family rather than a fruitful career as a doctor. The article shows one in four women takes into consideration the gender when choosing a specialty; while for men gender is not a limiting factor in their occupational choice. To tackle the problem by having a talk to an offender turned out to be the main solution. Moreover, nearly one in four respondents would prefer to quit and look for other work place. Furthermore, the authors attempted to find out if there is the necessity to introduce feminisms to distinguish medical professionals by gender. The paper concluded a position of a woman doctor in Russia to be still far from being respectable and poorly compared to that of a man doctor.
