ON THE QUESTION OF THE CONCEPTS’ SPECIFICITY IN SOCIOLOGY

KLIUCHAREV G.A.

Abstract

What philosophers consider as conceptual thinking, sociologists attribute to theoretical tools, the result of operationalization in the process of working with empirical data. The necessary abstraction is limited by the recognition of the special role of subjectivity and social determination of cognition. In this transcendental-empirical space, sociological concepts are born, evolve and disappear into oblivion. They are the result of cognition of a continuously changing social world, the main rational form of being of science (Hegel). The specificity of sociological concepts is that they, as a rule, are excessively loaded with empiricism, environment of origin is everyday life itself. The article examines the features of the genesis and development of those sociological concepts that are conditioned by (associated with) the main modern scientific trends – deanthropocentrism, epistemology supplemented by sociality. The heuristic role of recent conceptual innovations is shown – invariants (G. G. Tatarova) and noumena (Zh. T. Toshchenko).

AUDIENCE OF THE DIGITAL MEDIA SPACE: SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTUALIZATION

KOLOMIETS V.P.

Abstract

The article plunges into the intricate world of sociological research of the audience, reflections on the state and status of this area, as it passes the moment when traditional media and their audience still exist and are active, but digital communication practices, datafication break the established ideas about the audience, challenge researchers, questioning its existence. The author defends the existence of the audience in the modern media space, reveals its diversity, a certain epistemology, which contains both established traditional ideas about the media audience and innovative models of its recording and interpretation. Along with this, the author takes the “audience” as a concept beyond communication practices and uses it to analyze social processes associated with the mediatization of modern society, filling the “sociology of the audience” with new content. Sociology of the audience, with the help of sociological knowledge, offers explanations of how people encounter the media, how they use them and how this affects them.

ALGORITHMIC RATIONALITY: FOR EVIL OR FOR GOOD?

PENNER R.V., IVANOV D.V., ASOCHAKOV Y.V.

Abstract

The focus of the current article is the study of Dmitry Ivanov and Yuri Asochakov “Digitalization and Critical Theory of Society”, published in “Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniya” in 2023. In particular, the designated article presents the concept of algorithmic rationality, the theoretical basis for which is the dialectical interpretation of critical theory. The authors proclaim a rebellion against digital totality, the sought-after horizon for which will be a return to the humanistic ideal. In the current article, in turn, algorithmic rationality is understood as a new epistemological prism that allows a person to see other, non-human, social actants in this world. The article problematizes the question, how to combine the optimization logic of algorithmic rationality with the critical reflection inherent in scientific rationality, and what are the consequences of this for the future production of knowledge and social practices.

Cyber Aggression and Cybercrime in Russia: Risk Factors

SHCHERBAKOV R.A.

Abstract

The study investigates social groups vulnerable to cyber aggression and cybercrime. The main objective is to examine how socio-demographic conditions, as well as cultural capital in the form of digital skills and everyday internet use shape the distribution of both types of cyber risks. The analysis relies on survey data from the Monitoring of Digital Transformation of Economy and Society, collected by ISSEK NRU HSE in April – May 2024 through face-to-face interviews. The representative sample (N = 10038) reflects the key socio-demographic characteristics of the Russia population. The survey results revealed that approximately one-third of respondents have experienced cyber aggression or cybercrime. Intrusive communication and tactless questions were identified as the most common forms of cyber aggression, while fraudulent emails requesting personal data were а most frequently recorded type of cybercrime. Regression analysis demonstrated that elderly individuals and those with higher education are more likely to experience a broader range of cybercrime. Younger respondents and individuals without higher education were found to be more exposed to a broader range of cyber aggression. The intensity of internet use in everyday activities significantly predicted vulnerability to both cyber aggression and cybercrime. Users engaged in online communication and gaming face higher exposure to cyber aggression, whereas online communication and online shopping were the strongest predictors of cybercrime. Higher levels of online privacy concerns, security skills, and information literacy were also associated with greater exposure to both threats. Overall, the findings highlight importance of considering both socio-demographic and behavioral factors in understanding digital risks.

ZOONTOLOGY AS A FIELD OF RESEARCH: A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

KATERNYI I.V., MOROZOV M.A.

Abstract

The paper examines development of the sociological perspective within animal studies, particularly focusing on issues of social zoontology, including the status, role and functions of animals in human society. From George H. Mead’s idea of the symbolic gap between animals and humans, sociology has evolved to a more sophisticated analysis of complex and diverse connections within interspecies communications. At the same time, the lack of clarity of the very concept of zoontology and embarrassing, inherently ambivalent position of animals “on the threshold” of human society make us talk about the permanent liminality of the ‘zoological structures’ of human sociality, resulting with a range of inconsistencies of social recognition. Ethical and legal patterns of humane zoontology are highlighted. The issues of ontological attribution, personhood (subjectivity) and normative strain in interspecies communications, including child and adolescent cruelty to animals during socialization, are analyzed in more detail.

The Role of Professional Education in Youth Adaptation: Perception Dynamics

POPOVA E.S.

Abstract

The degree of youth adaptability, understood as the ability of young people to integrate into social institutions, particularly the sphere of education, varies significantly within the context of educational stratification. The article analyzes the dynamics of perceptions regarding the role of education as a success criterion based on materials from the all-Russian monitoring conducted by the Institute of Sociology FCTAS RAS (data 2016–2024). The study identifies qualitative differences in adaptation strategies among youth subgroups and proposes a typology of adaptation strategies. Specifically, the research reveals the scale and possible reasons for the socio-cultural devaluation of higher professional education by the most educated part of the youth. The study discovers similarities in socio-psychological adaptation mechanisms between youth without professional education and those with higher education. The research highlights the stability of adaptation behavior among mid-level specialists, which may be related to both the specifics of blue-collar human capital and the height of institutional barriers in achieving desired goals. The most significant temporal markers in the studied period were 2020 and 2022. The first stage of the studied period was characterized by a sharp increase in the proportion of well-adapted young people with higher education, indicating an increased adaptive capacity of this group to changes. The lag in adaptation among the mid-level specialists group indicates the need for further study of factors influencing the adaptation potential of this category of youth. A significant trend was observed in the group without professional education, where there was an increase in the proportion of moderately adapted young people at the expense of poorly adapted ones. This may indicate the presence of internal adaptation resources even in the absence of formal professional education. By 2024, a trend towards stabilization of adaptability indicators was identified. The reduction of the poorly adapted group across all educational subgroups suggests a process of redistribution of adaptation resources.

Self-Education as a Necessary Component of Educational Routes: Opportunities and Limitations

MESHKOVA L.I.

Abstract

The problem of the effectiveness of self-education as one of the educational strategies for obtaining professional knowledge has become relevant in connection with the rapid digitalization of the sphere of professional education and the exponential growth of online learning programs that have occurred in the last five years. The article examines the trends in the participation in additional and non-formal professional education. The non-formal education segment has been actively developing in recent years after a decline. The problem of the effectiveness of online courses, the dropout rate of which is quite high, has been noted. The question arises about the importance of self-education practices in the educational process. The central theme of the article is the analysis of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of the concept of “self-education” as accumulated experience and practice necessary in any educational process and especially providing a competitive advantage in modern educational realities. The analysis of russian and foreign studies of self-education allowed us to compare various research traditions, find common ground and expose contradictions in the interpretation of such a social phenomenon as “self-education”, “self-directed learning” etc., when one concept refers to various social educational practices determined by the historical background, socio-economic context and features of specific educational systems. The results of the theoretical and methodological analysis have analytical potential for the practice of sociological research and for social management and forecasting in the field of professional online education.

THE SOCIAL CAPITAL OF ETHNICITY: A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

RYZHOVA S.V.

Abstract

Based on the theoretical approaches to the study of social capital presented in the works of P. Bourdieu, J. Cowman, N. Lin, R. Putnam, F. Fukuyama and Russian researchers, a definition and description of the social capital of ethnicity is proposed, its assets and indicators are considered. It is concluded that from a sociological point of view, the concept of “social capital of ethnicity” describes various processes of social integration and adaptation based on ethnic identity and trust. Its capabilities fully reveal their potential in a State that preserves and protects ethnic diversity. The social capital of ethnicity is indivisible and belongs to the entire Russian society, to all members of ethnic communities and groups. Based on data from the general sociological survey of the population of the Russian Federation conducted in 2024, the volume of the “Bonding” and “Bridging” social capital of ethnicity in the Russian Federation was analyzed and a conclusion was drawn about the presence of a balance of its forms in society.

RUSSIAN DIPLOMATS: TRANSFORMATION OF A PROFESSIONAL GROUP UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

IVANOVA E.Y.

Abstract

The article presents some results of the analysis of the features of the formation of a diplomats professional group in the context of social transformations in the process of historical development of Russia in the first half of the 20th century. The purpose of the study is to refute or confirm the hypothesis that social changes on the Russian soil (objective and subjective) do not have a decisive impact on the trajectories of intergenerational social mobility. The information base of the study is the biographical and encyclopedic reference books published in recent years about the last tsarist diplomats, the first diplomats of the Soviet era, career diplomats of the post-war years and modern representatives of the foreign ministry, publications on the problems of the formation of diplomacy in Russia, memoirs and interviews in the media of domestic diplomats. The relevance and novelty of the comprehensive study (in total, more than 4000 personalized data on domestic diplomats were analyzed) is associated with insufficient attention to the research devoted to this closed, small, elite group of professionals with significant educational, cultural and political capital, high status position and role in society. An original author’s approach to the study of the information array was used. The author analyzes educational and professional trajectories of different generations of diplomats, as well as the national, class and class composition of the Foreign Ministry, and vector of social mobility.

«HEROES ARE NOT ONLY THOSE WHO WORKED ON THE FRONTLINE»: MANAGEMENT THE SENSE OF INEQUALITY BY NON-FRONTLINE NURSES DURING AND AFTER COVID-19 PANDEMIC

BAISHA N.S.

Abstract

The emotional labor of frontline nurses and non-frontline nurses during the COVID‑19 pandemic is associated with stress, emotional exhaustion and uneven distribution of material and social support. In Russia, the labor of non-frontline nurses, which was also carried out in unsafe conditions – high risks of COVID‑19, is on the periphery of academic discussions. The author of the article raises the question of how non-frontline nurses manage their emotion, in particular, a sense of inequality. The article focuses on the analysis of the causes of emotions and the practices of its (non)expression in the non-covid hospitals. The empirical base of the study consisted of 28 interviews with Volgograd non-frontline nurses. As a result of the data analysis, the author identifies the grounds for (not)expressing a sense of inequality and concludes that the sense of inequality is modified into a sense of responsibility towards patients without coronavirus. Emotional involvement in patient care helps non-frontline nurses overcome sense of inequality and internal resistance to unfair working conditions both during and after the pandemic. The article contributes to an understanding of the emotional working conditions of non-frontline nurses, helps to identify the reasons why they do not go to the covid-hospitals, as well as their practices of managing sense of inequality.

GENERATIONAL SCENARIOS OF DELAYED HAPPINESS

ABRAMOVA S.B., ANTONOVA N.L.

Abstract

The article, based on survey data (n = 1170), determined that the emotional mood of the population includes scenarios according to which happiness is postponed indefinitely. The results of the study indicate a decrease in the severity of scenarios of delayed happiness with age. For respondents aged 18–24, the dominant scenarios are those related to personal development, gaining independence, and professional and work-related fulfillment. Among respondents aged 25–45, there is a shift in focus towards social status and material stability. Respondents aged 46–60 are more often focused on achieving stability and completion in life scenarios. Barriers to achieving happiness are uncertainty and self-prohibitions. The focus on increasing happiness through achieving goals in the future unites respondents of different age groups, but the content of goals differs depending on the value-meaning life perspective.

Democratic political values of youth in Kazakhstan and Turkey (a comparative analysis)

ZHAMPETOVA A.O., ALKAN Y.S., DERNEK K.O.

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative analysis of survey results on the political attitudes of university students in Kazakhstan (N = 616) and Turkey (N = 414), with a particular focus on how perceptions of democracy reflect different degrees of youth engagement in political processes. The findings reveal significant differences in levels of trust in democratic institutions, shaped by the distinct historical paths of the two Turkic-speaking countries. Turkish youth demonstrate a firm commitment to democratic values but also express considerable dissatisfaction with the existing political system. In contrast, Kazakhstani youth show less interest in democratic practices but greater loyalty to current political arrangements. These results illustrate that even “brotherly nations” can differ markedly in their political culture – an important consideration for sociologists in various countries, including Russia.

Social Mobility and Urbanization in China and Russia: Opportunities and Constraints

ZHANG J., LUO S., ZHANG D.

Abstract

The study explores the impact of urbanization on social mobility in China and Russia. The objects of the study were the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Moscow, and St. Peterburg, which is determined by their representativeness. The methodology is based on an mixed-method approach that combines elements of descriptive statistical and sociological research, including quantitative surveys (N = 2000), and in-depth interviews with 20 respondents. The data obtained were processed and analyzed using the SPSS software tools, which made it possible to identify the mechanism of urbanization’s influence on social mobility. The findings reveal that while urbanization creates opportunities for professional development and access to education, it also reinforces social inequalities, particularly through housing costs and institutional barriers like China’s hukou system. Notable differences between the countries include the slower pace of urbanization in Russia compared to China’s infrastructure overload. These findings highlight the complex and multidimensional nature of urbanization’s impact on social mobility and suggest pathways for mitigating barriers and enhancing opportunities in urban environments.

Value Constants of Russian Society in the Context of Current Civilizational Challenges for Russia (Theoretical Aspect)

KAPUSTINA N.N., TISHCHENKO I.V.

Abstract

This article examines the value constants of Russian society and their impact on the consolidation of the population in the context of some civilizational challenges. The main Russian values on the basis of which the state and society as a whole should function were presented. Particular attention was paid to the traditional values of Russia as the foundation for the consolidation of Russian society. The work emphasized the need to transmit generally significant values to the public in order current to overcome current threats and challenges that have arisen on the path of Russia’s development. The authors adhere to the point of view that the development of Russian society (in terms of value aspects) requires joint efforts of the state and citizens, built primarily on the joint adoption of established traditional Russian values.
